. >>> and such a sad morning here in newtown, connecticut. i'm joined by elizabeth vargas in new york. elizabeth, right behind me, the sandy hook firehouse, where so many moms and dads came to learn about their children. many slept here through the night. and this headline right here, from "the hartford courant" captures what so many are feeling here today. our hearts are broken. all our hearts are broken, over 20 little children, and more adults, dead after the worst shooting ever at a grade school. here's what we know right now. the shooter, adam lanza, 20 years old. he also shot his mother before coming to the school. some bodies of the children slain are still in the school. others have been removed. and families were notified overnight into the morning. the names of the victims will be released this morning. we're going to show you pictures of the vigil last night. you see the video right there. the churches packed in this small town. people praying and crying over this horrendous loss, a scene of so much grief. my "gma weekend" colleague, dan harris, is right here. you've been here since the begi

week after the deadly school shooting in newtown, connecticut, communities across the nation and around the world pay tribute to the victims. and the national rifle association speaks out for the first time since the attack. it proposes a controversial plan to prevent similar mass shootings. let's go "outfront." good evening. i'm soledad eye brine in for erin burnett. and washington working together, negotiating on this bill and what happened in newtown. but in middle america, nothing happens in a bubble. people are still shattered by that. and anybody that is dragging their feet, fighting, seeming petty less than a week after -- i'm sorry, this is the worst tragedy i can think of as far as just shattering the soul of this country. i say since 9/11, in my lifetime. 9/11 and this. then i guess you'd have to go back to kennedy's assassination. i can't believe how shaken -- people are just talking about this all the time. they're looking at washington squabbling over numbers. and since they've already decided on the big issues, they're just thinking, they're so dysfunctional. and whoever gets the blame for this, it's in big trouble politically. >> no question. and it's not just on the fiscal stuff. it's on other things, too. i mean, you know, i thought your incredibly eloquent statement last week reflects what a lot of people feel including a lot of people who have had reservations before about doing something. that fight's just about to begin. the high water

he said after the newtown massacre. he said if you live through a school shooting, you understand you don't really need these weapons. i don't know why a normal person would need an assault rifle. virginia tech had it's own police force. others did too. we are talking about what you said over and over. this is what the nra wants to do. given the history of there being armed -- all kinds of armed guards at schools where there were shootings, do you think it will really work? >> well, you know, when we call 911, we don't want to disarm security guard showing up to help us. now, there are many different things we can do. that perhaps is appropriate in some situations. i believe new york city schools, many of them, have security officers that are armed. that's not the whole picture. if we focus just on the firearm, we miss the opportunity to address the larger problems here with our mental health system, which is in shambles in this country, and what is really comes down to is money, why are we going to put our priorities, in the mill ear, overseas, or right here with our own people in am

, the fiscal cliff, newtown, connecticut, what happened up there, that's the gem feeling overall. jcpenney, they've had promotions walking away from it every day, low discount price story. oppenheimer noted discount racks had been cleared and the traffic seems to have improved in that store. maybe that change in their philosophy has helped them out. that's a note that was out on oppenheimer today. bottom line here, guys, is i think we are seeing some movement with some companies to deal with some of these retail sales issues. you'll see a lot of pressure on margins. david, i think you mentioned this, about what was going on with inflows and outflows from equity mutual funds. it's true we're continuing to get outflows from equity mutual funds. that's certainly been disappointing. we had it going through up until last week. the end of last week, it was reported the first outflows from treasuries. more specifically, from general bond funds. that's the first time we've seen this in a very, very long time. all right, it was a very small number, something on the order of $1 billion or something
